Web Handouts The Proper Format for Essays The rules outlined below are simply a matter of convention, what instructors and others have come to expect in terms of the way essays should be formatted. Make sure to follow these conventions for the essays you submit in this course.
The instructions below concerning Microsoft Word refer specifically to Word 97, but the same instructions, or slight variations, should also apply to other versions of Word or to different word processors.
Double Space Your Essays Your essays always should be double spaced. I sometimes notice that students double space by pressing [Enter] twice at the end of a line. The document still will be single spaced, but there will be a blank line between each two lines of text. A document "formatted" in this way can end up looking like a mess if you add or delete material while revising or if I add comments while grading.
While you might see a double-spaced document, the software knows that the document really is still single spaced. In Microsoft Word, you can double space a document by clicking on the "Format" menu, clicking on "Paragraph," and then choosing "Double" under "Line Spacing.
You can double space a document that is already single spaced by highlighting the text and pressing [Control 2]. Use the standard font: NEVER use a variety of different fonts in your essays. Doing so will make your essay difficult to read! To change the font to point Times New Roman, simply find the area in the upper left of your word processing screen where you can see the name of the font.
Most likely, you will see "Times New Roman. To the right of the name of the font, you will see a little box with a number in it. If "12" is not the number in the box, click on the arrow directly to the right of that box and click on "12" to change the font to the correct size.
Do not use italics or bold fonts throughout an entire paper. Include a Short Title You always should include a short title for every essay or paper you write.
The title should be centered. After you have typed your title, you should press [Enter] twice before beginning the introduction of your essay. Your entire essay should be double spaced, but "double double spacing" should separate your title from the introduction of your essay. Do not underline your title and do not put quotation marks around your title.
You also should not put your title into bold fonts or italics. Your title can end with a question mark or an exclamation point, but not with a period. The first and last words and all important words in your title should be capitalized.
Your title should be short and concise, reflecting accurately your subject and your approach to that subject.Rules of Using Proper Nouns. To use proper nouns liberally in a sentence, it is essential to apply the rules of using proper nouns in a sentence, that are given below.
